Putty fillers were once a mainstay of hardwood floor repair. Over time, however, the putty hardens, chips, and flakes. This leaves your floor looking even worse, and requiring you to dig out the old putty and replace it. For this reason, very few floor experts will still suggest using a putty filler.

While not always popular, floor wax has the benefit of filling the tiny pores in your wood floor and sealing it against moisture. This not only prevents damage from spills, but it also helps to keep moisture in the boards from evaporating.
One popular method of filling larger gaps requires using strips of the same hardwood your floor is made from. Make sure the room is humid to avoid the risk of your wood strip being pushed out the next time your floorboards swell.
Cut the strips and apply wood glue to both sides. Next, use a hammer with some sort of padding (or a rubber mallet) to drive the strips tightly between the boards, allowing a tiny bit to remain above the floor level.
Once the glue has dried, remove the excess wood using a block plane so that the floor becomes smooth over the patch site. Note that this method is used for square-curt boards and is not very effective with tongue-and-groove floors
As with using pieces of wood, you will want to measure the rope to fit. Avoid synthetic rope, and wedge it into place. Unlike the strips, you will want to make sure rope fillers are flush with the adjacent boards. The rope may then be stained to match your floor.
Sometimes the best method to repair your floor is to replace it entirely. This is especially true when the gaps are large and numerous, or there are other signs of damage to the boards such as warping or missing slivers. Even though this is an expensive method, attempting to repair a badly damaged hardwood floor can prove far more costly in the long run.
Over the course of a year, your floorboards will shrink and expand because of fluctuations in temperature and humidity. If you have wide gaps in a wide-plank wood floor, using natural rope as a filler is a relatively easy and inexpensive option. If the gaps in your wood floor are smaller and more cosmetic, a prefabricated wood filler or a wood dust and wood flour cement mix would be good options.
Large gaps in wood floors that do not close up during the summer months could be a result of excessive moisture (check the crawl space below), being located too close to a heating vent, incorrect nail spacing, or structural settlement issues.

Simple as they are, painted wood floors are historically significant parts of many old houses and they deserve good stewardship. With quality materials and proper preparation, you can revitalize your painted wood floors and preserve them for many years to come.
Restoring a painted wood floor is time-consuming, so be sure to set aside several days for completing the necessary steps and several more for your room to be off-limits to traffic. What is a week or two when a good paint job will last decades?
Properly applied, the caulk will move with the wood. The correct caulk will not adhere to the backer rod, so it is not as likely to crack from the dimensional stress of a three-point bond. The better you cleaned out the debris along the sides of the boards and inside the crack, the better your caulk adhesion will be. Over time, the caulk may split some, but this flexible filling is still better than hard debris that can damage your boards. If you use caulk that is close in color to your paint any cracking will be less visible. Otherwise opt for black, the least obvious color.
Now you are ready for paint. When it comes to deciding between oil-based paint and water-based (latex) paint, generally we prefer oil for any high-traffic areas and most woodwork. When you consider that a floor is probably the most demanding surface for paint, the extra work and wait required for oil-based paint is worth it. All floor paints have an exceptionally glossy sheen because they are formulated with resins that set up harder than regular paint for additional durability. (There are latex floor paints, some with cross-link activators, which we have only used in low-traffic areas.) A good neighborhood specialty-paint store is invaluable to help you understand the paint brand options.
Afterward, apply the final coat using the same techniques as for the first coat. This final coat should set up for a good week, and it will take a month for two coats of oil paint to cure fully. During this time the floor can feel firm and dry, but it will still lift easily with a heel turn or while moving furniture. (We test paint softness by pushing a thumbnail into the paint in a room corner or other inconspicuous spot.) If you want to move back in, put your furniture on pads or casters and lay down paper for extra security while walking on your beautifully painted wood floor.
Winter weather hits wood flooring twice. When temperatures begin to drop homeowners turn on or up their heating system and start keeping doors and windows closed. This heat dries out the home and moisture is pulled from the wood causing the wood to shrink. Areas around fireplaces, furnaces, heating ducts, as well as wall and baseboard heaters are especially bad for drying out hardwood floors, with particular noticeability in areas surrounding wood stoves.
Later, when the air temperatures outside begin to fall below freezing, much of the remaining moisture in the air falls out as snow, frost or ice. So, when we get a longer cold spell with ice or snow, we may experience more shrinkage in wood floors than usual. The upper floors in a home or building may experience even greater issues if proper humidity levels are not maintained (heat rises).
As temperature and humidity changes occur in summer, seasonal cracking begins to remedy itself. As moisture is replaced back into the air, moisture is absorbed back into wood. Expansion occurs and wood floors begin the process of trying to return to their original, pre-winter-season condition.
It is important to remember that shrinkage and expansion is not a flaw in the wood or an installation-related problem. Just remember that part of the beauty and enjoyment of your wood floors comes from the changes that will occur when you live with a natural product in your home.
Restore your wood floors to their original glory. Waxing and buffing can sometimes provide a good shine, but refinishing the floor is usually the only way to restore your old wood floors to their original richness and beauty.
Variations in temperature and humidity cause the wood to expand and contract. Thus small gaps and cracks are always present. Winter months tend to be drier making cracks and gaps more visible. In summer, humidity rises, causing some cracks to virtually disappear.
Flooring experts like this pre-mixed filler because it shrinks less than any other wood floor filler. It is a better choice for filling large areas. It also accepts the color of stain, Rubio, and polyurethane very well. It doesn't have a chemical binder in it, so it quickly reconstitutes when mixed with water, even when dry. It comes in Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, and Ebony. However, Timbermate mixes with oil or latex tints, dyes, and stains, accurately reproducing any wood color.
You mix this resin with the fine sanding dust retained from sanding the floor. The advantage of this product is it creates wood filler that exactly matches the floor. Use sanding dust, a.k.a. wood flour of 80 grit or finer.
Glitsa wood flour cement has two significant advantages. First, the epoxy itself lasts a lifetime. Secondly, there is no waste. You can mix just the amount you need for each job. Another advantage is that you can mix up a different color for spot filling using a different dust shade. Sometimes, maple sanding dust looks better on a light spot in an oak board. Unfortunately, Glitsa is only available by the gallon and, due to its toxic nature, cannot be shipped via parcel services.
Elmer's calls their wood filler for hardwood floors "color-changing" because it turns pink only when it's completely dry. That's a bonus for DIYers, so they know when to sand, paint, or stain. Elmer's is one of the best fillers for larger holes because it won't shrink or crack. It's also water-based for easy clean-up and non-toxic. 2ff7e9595c
